A beautiful illustration of the deep connection between nature and the traditional beliefs of the Burundian people. For each queen mother’s tomb, there is a panel that identifies her last resting place.

Located on Mpotsa hill in Rusaka commune, Mwaro province, these tombs are sacred places. This forest site marked by trees such as ficus, erythrina and dragonnier, is a sacred space guarded by ritualists attributed to the Banyange clan. Like kings, queen mothers were also preserved, bodies smoke and wrapped in bull skins symbolizing their status.
