Second Catholic mission founded in 1899 by the White Fathers.

Today known for its marian sanctuary, Mugera is a place full of history and spirituality. Former royal capital, where king Mwezi Gisabo was born, this site was once a sanctuary of the initiatory cult of kiranga, a sacred traditional practice of the peoples of Burundi. This explains the origin of the word “mumana za mugera”, meaning “to the gods of Mugera”.
