Each element of the bundle symbolizes that every individual, although different, can contribute to the strength of the group when efforts are united. National Unity Day is celebrated every 5 February.

The National Unity Monument of Burundi, erected 500 m from the Rwagasore Mausoleum, symbolizes the reconstruction of unity among Burundians after repeated crises that the country has experienced. Designed by Italian architect Hermano Mengeti, this monument is a powerful symbol of reconciliation. Its originality lies in its unique design inspired by the daily life of Burundian farmers. It represents a bundle of sticks tied with a single rope, with the inscription Dusenyere ku mugozi umwe, expressing the collective strength derived from unity.
