The commemoration of Burundi’s Independence Day, a national celebration, takes place every 1 July. Burundi gained independence in 1962.

Located in the city center of Bujumbura, among buildings from the Belgian colonial era, this square was formerly known as Eugene Jungers Square, named after a former Ruanda-Urundi governor. This site commemorates the nation’s memory and celebrates Burundi’s independence, marking the transition to national sovereignty.
